Finger joint pain in Dubai: Which Doctor to See

Usually evaluated by: Rheumatology

Finger joint pain means discomfort, stiffness or swelling at the joints of the fingers (the small hinge or knuckle areas). It is a common complaint affecting people of all ages and can come on suddenly or gradually.

Many different problems can cause finger joint pain, from wear-and-tear changes and overuse to inflammation, infection or injury. In Dubai, factors such as frequent air-conditioning, dust exposure during outdoor activity and active lifestyles may influence symptoms but do not change which specialist should evaluate persistent or unexplained joint pain.

When to seek urgent care

  • High fever with a red, hot, very swollen finger — possible joint infection.
  • Sudden severe pain with an inability to move the finger after an injury — possible fracture or dislocation.
  • Rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, or red streaks toward the arm.
  • Numbness, loss of blood flow (cold, pale, or blue finger tips), or severe uncontrollable pain.
  • New widespread rash with joint pain or difficulty breathing — seek emergency care.

If any of these apply, call 998 (Dubai ambulance) or go to the nearest emergency department. Emergency numbers

Conditions a doctor may consider

Commonly associated causes — only a doctor can diagnose which (if any) applies to you.

Osteoarthritis

A common 'wear-and-tear' condition where joint cartilage thins over time, causing pain, stiffness and sometimes bony bumps at finger joints. Symptoms usually develop gradually and are linked to activity and age.

Rheumatoid arthritis

An inflammatory condition where the immune system causes joint swelling, pain and stiffness, often affecting the same joints on both hands. A doctor will look for joint tenderness, morning stiffness and blood tests that suggest inflammation.

Psoriatic arthritis

An inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis (a skin condition). It can cause pain, swelling and sometimes a sausage-like swelling of a whole finger (dactylitis).

Gout or crystal arthritis

Sharp, often sudden attacks of intense joint pain caused by tiny crystals forming in the joint. Although gout more commonly affects the big toe, it can affect finger joints and usually causes marked redness and swelling.

Infectious (septic) arthritis or osteomyelitis

Bacterial or, less commonly, fungal infection of a joint or nearby bone can cause severe pain, warmth, swelling and fever. This is important to rule out quickly because it requires urgent treatment.

Trauma and tendon injuries

A recent injury, sprain, fracture or tendon tear can produce localized pain, bruising, reduced motion or deformity. Repetitive activities and minor knocks are also common causes.

Which specialist should you see?

A rheumatologist (a doctor who specializes in arthritis and inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions) is the specialist most often consulted for persistent, unexplained or inflammatory finger joint pain. Rheumatologists assess patterns of joint involvement, order blood tests and imaging, and manage long-term inflammatory conditions.

Other specialists who may be involved include orthopedic surgeons (for fractures, significant deformity or surgical needs), hand therapists or physiotherapists (for rehabilitation), and infectious disease or emergency clinicians if infection is suspected. For many cases, starting with your general practitioner (GP) or family doctor in Dubai is appropriate; they can perform initial tests, treat simple problems, and refer you to a rheumatologist or other specialist when needed.

While you wait for your appointment

  • Rest the affected finger and avoid activities that make the pain worse.
  • Apply a cold pack for acute swelling or a warm compress for stiffness — use a barrier and limit sessions to 15–20 minutes.
  • Immobilize gently with a soft splint or supportive taping if movement increases pain.
  • Keep the hand elevated when swollen and try gentle range-of-motion exercises as comfort allows.
  • If you have chronic conditions, maintain hydration and avoid prolonged exposure to very dry, air-conditioned environments that may stiffen joints.

What to expect at the visit

At a GP or rheumatology appointment you will be asked about when and how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, other symptoms (fever, skin changes, morning stiffness), medical history and recent injuries. The clinician will examine the hands to assess swelling, tenderness, range of motion and any deformity.

Common tests include blood tests for inflammation and specific antibodies, X-rays to look at bone and joint structure, and sometimes ultrasound or MRI for soft tissues. For suspected infection, joint aspiration (drawing fluid from the joint) may be done. Your doctor will explain findings and next steps, which may include conservative care, physiotherapy, or referral to a specialist.
