Sore throat in Dubai: Which Doctor to See

Usually evaluated by: ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat)

A sore throat is pain, scratchiness or irritation of the throat that often appears with a cold, cough or after shouting. It is a very common symptom and usually short‑lived, but the cause can range from mild viral infections to allergies or throat irritation.

In Dubai, factors like dry air from air conditioning, desert dust and frequent travel can make throat irritation more likely. Most sore throats are self-limiting; a doctor will look for signs of infection, inflammation, or other causes that may need specialist care.

When to seek urgent care

  • Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing (stridor)
  • Severe difficulty swallowing or inability to swallow saliva
  • High fever that does not respond to usual measures
  • Drooling, neck stiffness, or a rapidly growing neck swelling
  • Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth or throat
  • Sudden change in voice with breathing difficulty

If any of these apply, call 998 (Dubai ambulance) or go to the nearest emergency department. Emergency numbers

Conditions a doctor may consider

Commonly associated causes — only a doctor can diagnose which (if any) applies to you.

Viral pharyngitis

A throat inflammation caused by common viruses (like those that cause colds or flu). It often comes with runny nose, cough, and mild fever and usually improves on its own.

Bacterial throat infection (including strep throat)

A bacterial infection, commonly group A Streptococcus, can produce a painful throat, fever and swollen glands. A clinician may test for bacteria to decide if antibiotics are appropriate.

Allergic rhinitis and postnasal drip

Allergies to dust, pollen or indoor triggers can cause mucus to drip down the back of the throat, producing ongoing irritation and a sore or scratchy feeling.

Tonsillitis

Inflammation of the tonsils, which may be viral or bacterial, can cause severe sore throat, visible swollen tonsils and sometimes white spots or bad breath.

Gastroesophageal reflux (acid reflux)

Stomach acid coming up into the throat can cause chronic soreness or hoarseness, particularly after meals or when lying down.

Irritant exposure and dry air

Air conditioning, desert dust, smoke or shouting can irritate the throat without infection. Symptoms often improve when the irritant is removed and air is humidified.

Which specialist should you see?

An ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist — also called an otolaryngologist — is the doctor who evaluates persistent, recurrent, or complicated throat problems. ENTs assess the throat, tonsils and voice box and manage conditions that may need procedures, imaging or long‑term treatment.

A general practitioner (GP) or family doctor is the appropriate first stop for most new sore throats. The GP can diagnose common causes, perform rapid tests for bacterial infections, start initial treatment, and refer you to an ENT or other specialist (such as an allergist or gastroenterologist) if needed.

While you wait for your appointment

  • Stay hydrated and sip warm fluids to soothe the throat
  • Use a humidifier or inhale steam to ease dryness from air conditioning
  • Rest your voice and avoid smoking or exposure to smoke and dust
  • Gargle with plain warm salt water for temporary relief
  • Seek advice from a GP if symptoms worsen or do not improve in a few days

What to expect at the visit

At a GP or ENT visit you will be asked about the onset, duration and pattern of the sore throat, associated symptoms (fever, cough, nasal symptoms, voice change), recent travel, exposures and any medical history. The clinician will inspect the mouth, throat and neck and may look in the ears and nose.

Common tests include a rapid strep test or throat swab for bacterial culture, and sometimes blood tests. An ENT may use a flexible nasoendoscope (a thin camera passed through the nose) to view the back of the throat or larynx if symptoms are persistent or unexplained. Imaging or referral to other specialists is reserved for complex cases.
