Hoarse voice in Dubai: Which Doctor to See

Usually evaluated by: ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat)

A hoarse voice means your voice sounds raspy, strained, weak or lower in pitch than usual. It results from a change in how the vocal cords vibrate and is a common symptom across all ages.

Causes range from short-term irritation — such as a viral cold, throat strain from shouting, dry indoor air or desert dust — to longer-lasting problems that a doctor will assess. Most cases are temporary, but persistent or severe hoarseness should be evaluated.

When to seek urgent care

  • Hoarseness lasting more than 3 weeks without improvement
  • Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing (stridor)
  • Trouble swallowing or feeling of a lump that doesn't go away
  • Coughing up blood or unexplained weight loss
  • Sudden severe voice loss after neck injury or surgery

If any of these apply, call 998 (Dubai ambulance) or go to the nearest emergency department. Emergency numbers

Conditions a doctor may consider

Commonly associated causes — only a doctor can diagnose which (if any) applies to you.

Acute laryngitis

Inflammation of the voice box (larynx), usually from a viral infection or voice overuse. Symptoms often last a few days to a couple of weeks and commonly improve with rest and supportive care.

Chronic laryngitis or reflux-related irritation

Longer-lasting inflammation that can be associated with acid reflux (stomach contents irritating the throat), smoking, or ongoing exposure to irritants like air-conditioning, dust or dry air.

Vocal cord nodules or polyps

Small, noncancerous growths on the vocal cords caused by repeated strain or misuse of the voice; they can make the voice hoarse and breathy and often need specialist assessment.

Neurological or palsy-related causes

Conditions affecting the nerves that move the vocal cords (for example, vocal cord palsy) can cause persistent hoarseness and may need imaging and specialist care.

Allergic or environmental irritation

Allergies, inhaled irritants such as Dubai desert dust, smoke, or very dry air from prolonged air-conditioning use can inflame the throat and temporarily change the voice.

Less common — structural or serious conditions

On rare occasions, hoarseness can be associated with growths or cancers of the larynx or nearby structures; these are uncommon but are part of what a doctor may consider for persistent symptoms.

Which specialist should you see?

An ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist — also called an otolaryngologist — is the main doctor who evaluates hoarseness. They examine the throat and vocal cords, often using a flexible or rigid scope to look directly at the voice box. If vocal cord problems are suspected, they manage diagnosis and treatment.

A general practitioner (GP) or family physician is a reasonable first step for most people in Dubai: they can assess severity, treat common causes, advise on voice rest and environmental measures, and refer you to ENT when needed. Speech and language therapists may be involved for voice therapy; gastroenterology may be consulted if reflux is suspected; neurologists or oncologists may be involved for specific findings.

While you wait for your appointment

  • Rest your voice — avoid whispering and heavy talking or shouting
  • Stay hydrated and use a humidifier or steam inhalation to ease dryness
  • Avoid smoke, strong perfumes and other airborne irritants; limit alcohol and caffeine which can dry the throat
  • Manage reflux triggers (avoid late meals, spicy or fatty foods) and minimize throat clearing
  • Use saltwater gargles for comfort; seek medical review if no improvement in a week or if red flags appear

What to expect at the visit

At a GP or ENT visit you will be asked about the onset, duration and pattern of hoarseness, recent illnesses, voice use, smoking, reflux symptoms and any breathing or swallowing problems. The doctor will examine your ears, nose and throat and listen to your voice.

An ENT may perform laryngoscopy — passing a thin scope through the nose or mouth to view the vocal cords — and could request imaging or refer for voice therapy or specialist treatment depending on findings. These examinations are routine and often performed in clinic.
