Dehydration in Dubai: Which Doctor to See

Usually evaluated by: General Practice (GP)

Dehydration means your body has lost more fluid than it has taken in. In Dubai’s hot, dry climate and during busy outdoor or travel activity, mild dehydration is common and usually reversible with fluids and basic care.

Causes range from not drinking enough, heavy sweating, diarrhoea or vomiting, fever, and some medicines, to less common medical problems that affect fluid balance. A GP (family doctor) is usually the first clinician to assess what's causing your dehydration.

When to seek urgent care

  • Fainting, persistent dizziness, or collapse
  • Very low urine output or no urine for several hours
  • Confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty waking
  • Very rapid heartbeat, very low blood pressure, or difficulty breathing
  • Repeated vomiting or severe diarrhea that prevents keeping fluids down
  • High fever (over 39°C/102°F) or suspected heatstroke after prolonged heat exposure

If any of these apply, call 998 (Dubai ambulance) or go to the nearest emergency department. Emergency numbers

Conditions a doctor may consider

Commonly associated causes — only a doctor can diagnose which (if any) applies to you.

Simple fluid loss from heat or exercise

Loss of water and salts from sweating during hot weather, outdoor work, or vigorous exercise. Symptoms often include thirst, dark urine, and lightheadedness.

Gastroenteritis (stomach bug)

Viral or bacterial infections that cause vomiting and diarrhea can quickly cause dehydration, especially if fluids are not replaced.

Medication-related dehydration

Some diuretics, laxatives, and other medicines can increase fluid loss or affect thirst, and a doctor will review your medications as a possible cause.

Chronic medical conditions

Diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes (high blood sugar causing excess urination), kidney problems, or hormonal disorders can reduce fluid balance and may need specialist follow-up.

Heat-related illness

Heat exhaustion and, less commonly, heatstroke are related problems where dehydration occurs alongside overheating; these need prompt assessment, especially after prolonged sun exposure.

Which specialist should you see?

Primary evaluation for dehydration is usually done by a General Practice (GP) or family physician. GPs assess symptoms, check vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, temperature), review medications and medical history, and advise on fluid replacement and follow-up.

If the GP suspects an underlying condition (for example uncontrolled diabetes, kidney disease, or severe infection), they may arrange blood tests, urine tests, or refer you to specialists such as internal medicine, nephrology (kidney), or endocrinology. For severe heat illness or rapidly worsening symptoms, emergency care is appropriate.

While you wait for your appointment

  • Move to a cooler, shaded or air-conditioned place and rest.
  • Sip water or an oral rehydration solution slowly and regularly; avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine.
  • Replace electrolytes with balanced oral rehydration fluids or sports drinks if tolerated and appropriate.
  • Loosen tight clothing and lie down with feet elevated if you feel faint (unless you have breathing problems).
  • Monitor symptoms closely and seek medical attention if you cannot keep fluids down or symptoms worsen.

What to expect at the visit

At the GP visit you will be asked about how long symptoms have lasted, recent fluid intake, activity and heat exposure, vomiting or diarrhea, urine output, and any medicines you take. The doctor will check your pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and general appearance.

Common tests include a urine test for concentration and possible infection, and blood tests to check electrolytes, kidney function, and blood sugar. Based on findings, the GP will advise on fluid replacement, short-term monitoring, and whether referral or emergency care is needed.
